Secret Life Of Bees Response
This passage is when Lily is talking with August about Lily's Mother.
"You think you want to know something, and then once you do, all you can think about is erasing it from your mind. From know on when people asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I planned to say, Amnesiac." pg 249
I can really identify with this statement. I can be really curious about things, ask a question and then get an answer that I didn't want to know. Can anyone else idenfiy with this? I think that Lily has many moments like this in the book, like when she finds out from T-Ray that she shot her mother. I think that it really shows how determined and courageous she is as a character to keep trying to find out things and continue to be curious when she knows the answers will be hard to take.
I want to hear what you guys think about it.
Sooo...yeah.
That's all.

Sara-
What a great response. I can identify with this idea as well--knowledge--especially about oneself--can be so hard to become aware of. Lily certainly struggles with this. This is what growing up, perhaps.

Sara, thanks for sharing your great thoughts.
Knowledge can be painful often times. that is why some people say “ ignorance is bliss”.
When Lily learns she had shot her mother, she did not want to erase it from her memory. instead, she lived with it and this make her stronger and courageous. Life does not stop at the hour we learn about our mistakes.

I agree with you that she is determined. I can relate to your response to. When you ask something, but you're not sure if you really want to know the truth. I think maybe Lily is tired of lies and secrets and she just wants to what really happened to her mother.

I can definately identify with this.
It happens to me all the time. I guess it is just part of human curiosity to want to know something even if the answer is most likely not what you want to hear. I really like the line about wanting to become an amnesiac. I am sure we have all felt that.
